Registering a Trailer/Caravan

A brand new trailer/caravan is a trailer/caravan that has been purchased from a dealer.  This includes brand new trailers purchased interstate and returned to the ACT on an unregistered vehicle permit to obtain registration.

Trailers and caravans do not need CTPI, they are covered by the insurance of the towing vehicle.

If the trailer has been modified or is homemade, a weighbridge ticket is needed in addition to the usual registration requirements.

Trailers drawn by motorbikes, or side cars attached to motorbikes, must weigh no more than the unladen motorbike.

To Register a Brand New Trailer/Caravan that was Purchased in the ACT

You do not need a roadworthy inspection if the place of purchase has supplied you with an inspection report from an Authorised Inspection Station.

To Register a Brand New Trailer/Caravan that was Purchased Interstate

You must obtain a roadworthy inspection report from the Dickson Vehicle Inspection Station or an Approved Inspection Station in the ACT.

To Register a Used Trailer/Caravan

To register a used trailer/caravan that is registered in their name in another jurisdiction, customers must provide a certificate of inspection from either the Dickson Vehicle Inspection Station or an Approved Inspection Station. For heavy trailers, the certificate of inspection must be issued by the Dickson Vehicle Inspection Station.

Note: For information on transferring registration of a previously ACT registered trailer you have bought refer instead to the Transferring Registration page.
