Registering
a vehicle modified to carry wheelchair
passengers
A
privately used goods carrying vehicle that is
modified to carry passengers confined to a
wheelchair can be registered in the ACT as a
passenger carrying vehicle. The cost of registering
a vehicle this way will be less as the
vehicle will attract a lower compulsory
third party insurance premium and can be charged the
lowest rate of registration which is normally
applicable only to vehicles with a tare weight less
than 976 kilograms.
This
concession cannot be provided to a wheelchair
accessible taxi or commercially operated goods
carrying vehicles that have been modified to carry
passengers confined to a wheelchair.
Vehicles that have been specially modified to carry
passengers confined to a wheelchair must be
inspected by Road User Services prior to
registration. The vehicle owner will be required to
present an engineer's report at the time of vehicle
inspection. It is recommended that owners
considering vehicle modifications contact a
recognised engineering signatory for advice prior to
commencing any vehicle modifications. A list of
engineering signatories is available by clicking the
link below.
Once
your vehicle has passed an inspection it will be
approved to be registered as a passenger carrying
vehicle. Once registered, renewal reminder notices
will contain the correct registration and third
party insurance fees for a passenger carrying
vehicle.
If
you require further information or wish to book a
vehicle inspection, please phone Canberra Connect on
