Upgrade Driver Licence

Information on the upgrading a driver licence in the Australian Capital Territory

When an ACT licence holder applies for an upgrade of a licence class or type, an upgrade form must be completed.

To upgrade to a higher class of licence there is a minimum period that the current licence is to be held. The table below indicates the period for each class of licence.

Class
Minimum period current licence held

LR   hold a class C licence or equivalent for at least 1 year
MR   hold a class C licence or equivalent licence for at least 1 year
HR   hold a class C, licence or equivalent licence for at least 2 years
HC   hold a class MR or HR licence or equivalent licence for at least 1 year
MC   hold a class HR or HC licence or equivalent licence for at least 1 year

ACT licensees seeking to upgrade their current ACT car licence to licence classes LR or higher, can learn to drive on their existing licences provided they pass a knowledge test at a Road Ready Centre (Downer or Phillip).

People who are learning to drive must be accompanied by a person who holds a current, full licence class for the type of vehicle being used for tuition or a higher licence class. The tutor must have held that higher class of licence for at least 1 year.

The tutor is to supervise the learner with respect to the driving of the vehicle. All learner drivers are required to display "L" plates on their vehicles.

Please refer to the Yellow Pages for a list of accredited training providers.
