Driving Assessment Information

Information on how to prepare and book for a one-off driving assessment with a government licence examiner.

Preparing for your assessment

The key to preparing for your driving assessment is to get as much practice as possible with family and friends and if possible with a Driving Instructor. Contact details for Driving Instructors can be found in the Yellow Pages under "Driving Schools".

When practicing, try to keep in mind the 22 competencies you will be assessed against and the ACT Road Rules. Descriptions of each of the 22 competencies can be found in the Towards your P plates in the ACT ( PDF 549Kb ) booklet.

The road rules can be found in the ACT Road Rules handbook. Information for new drivers can also be found on the Road Ready web site.

The following list gives the most common reasons learner drivers are found not yet competent. Try to pay particular attention to these areas to increase your chance of success.

  1. Speeding
  2. Not applying the right of way rules
  3. Failed to stop at STOP sign
  4. Lack of anticipation and judgement
  5. Lack of observation
  6. Failed to stop at red light
  7. Lack of mirror use and head checks
  8. Lack of looking, scanning and planning ahead
