Review of Accessible Public
Transport Action Plan for the ACT –
Have Your Say
Public
transport is a crucial part of the
lives of people with disabilities,
facilitating participation in
employment, education, health care,
recreational services and social
activities. The Office of
Regulatory Services has commenced
the review and update of the 2009 –
2012 Accessible Pubic Transport
Action Plan as part of the ongoing
commitment to striving toward an
effective and reliable accessible
public transport system for all
members of the ACT Community.
Customer feedback is a vital part of
the review process, and will assist
to identify current barriers to
accessing public transport services
and infrastructure for people with
disabilities, and to further
indentify priorities for the
upcoming Action Plan.
We
invite people with disabilities and
other interested persons to
participate in this process and have
your say about your experiences
accessing public transport
services. You can participate
online, via email, or over the
telephone.

The ACT Government's Accessible
Public Transport Action Plan
2009-2012 was launched on Wednesday
30 September 2009.
An accessible public transport
system is essential for people with
disabilities. It allows people to
more easily access activities such
as education, employment and health
and recreational facilities.
The ACT Government undertook a
comprehensive review of ACT public
transport services and
infrastructure in the development of
the Action Plan. It identified many
areas where the Government has made
improvements to accessibility.
These include:
- meeting the target of 25% of
the ACTION fleet being
accessible buses and ensuring
compliance with future targets
- making bus information more
accessible through different
formats
- increasing the number of
wheelchair-accessible taxis on
the road to 26
- the provision of Gold Card
free bus travel for people aged
70 and over on ACTION buses
- disability awareness
training for bus drivers.
The Action Plan sets
out a range of tasks to be
undertaken to increase the
accessibility of the public
transport system including:
- the development of
customised Action Plans by
public transport and
infrastructure providers
- reviewing the number of
wheelchair accessible taxis,
licences and drivers to ensure
response times are satisfactory
- a public awareness/education
campaign
- working with other
jurisdictions to investigate
broad scale safety improvements
to secure mobility aids in buses
and taxis
- reviewing compliance against
Disability Standards for
infrastructure such as pathways,
lighting and signage of bus
stops, interchanges and taxi
ranks
- raising awareness about the
complaint mechanisms
- investigating financial
incentives for passengers and
taxi drivers/operators, such as
extending free bus travel to
people with disabilities.
